“The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series. -Goodreads

REVIEW

Oh my! This is a fantastic novel!! The book was addicting. I don’t remember being this drawn into either The Mortal Instruments or The Infernal Devices series. I remember loving those books, but this book takes it to a new level. It has been awhile since I struggled to put a book down. Lady Midnight was too addicting and intriguing to leave my hands for long.

I absolutely adore all the characters, and I don’t think I have ever seen such a large cast of characters so fully introduced. Emma’s fierce loyalty and Julien’s gentle love for his family made these characters so dynamic.

Another aspect I loved about this novel was the unpredictability. I don’t often find a novel that surprises me. I had guessed until the very end and was utterly wrong almost every time.

My favorite part of this novel, besides the romance, was how Clare brought in characters from the other series. We saw Clary and Jace  from the Mortal Instruments, Jem and Tessa from the Infernal Devices, and also Magnus who was in all the series. It was almost as if this series was just a fresh continuation of the Shadow world.

The cliffhanger is going to keep me begging for more novels! If only Clare had given me one more page, I could wait patiently, but no, I must anxiously await the next novel. What is going to happen to Mark and Emma, and Julien and Emma, and resultantly Mark and Julie?!?  I need to know!

    1. There are quite a few references to the events that took place in the previous series. I think you could read this one without prior shadow world knowledge, but it will be confusing at times. I do completely recommend the mortal instruments and the internal devices series. So if you have time I would recommend starting from the beginning.
