“This is the funniest book you’ll ever read about death.

It is a universally acknowledged truth that high school sucks. But on the first day of his senior year, Greg Gaines thinks he’s figured it out. The answer to the basic existential question: How is it possible to exist in a place that sucks so bad? His strategy: remain at the periphery at all times. Keep an insanely low profile. Make mediocre films with the one person who is even sort of his friend, Earl.

This plan works for exactly eight hours. Then Greg’s mom forces him to become friends with a girl who has cancer. This brings about the destruction of Greg’s entire life.-Goodreads

I was expecting great things from this book, yet I was slightly disappointed. While I knew from the first chapter this was going to be nothing like TFiOS, I wish it had been. To me the protagonist Greg Gaines was just stupid and selfish. Here is this girl he knows who gets cancer and all he thinks about is himself, for the most part. The story was interesting enough to keep chugging through it, but I don’t think I’ll ever want to own or reread this one. Occasionally the humor was actually funny, but too often it was crude. Also, the protagonist makes some slightly racist remarks which is not cool. Additionally the author made the Jackson family from a stereotype which bothered me as well. So I digress because this will just turn into a hate fest, which I’m not a fan of either.
